Stage Managers do a LOT of measuring, so naturally, we use a myriad of measurement tools. It's best to keep your kit stocked with tape measures (self-locking and fabric), an architect scale ruler, and a standard ruler. However, if you find yourself without the approrpriate tool, here are some quick SM Hacks for measuring!

RULERS

Measuring Short Distances

Here are some common items that can be used for taking small measurements:

  • A U.S. quarter is 1” in diameter
  • A dollar bill is 6.14” in length
  • An index card is (commonly) 3” X 5”
  • A piece of printer paper is 8 ½” X 11”

You can also use your height as a reference point!

ARCHITECT SCALE RULERS

Measuring Ground Plans

You can print a scale ruler for free online HERE.

(Make sure to follow the print instructions exactly!!)

Scale Reference:

  • 1” Scale = 1:12
  • ½” Scale = 1:24
  • ¼” Scale = 1:48

FABRIC TAPE MEASURE

Measuring People

If you need to take clothing measurements, but are without a fabric/cloth tape measure, use a piece of yarn or ribbon. Mark the length, lay the yarn out flat, then measure the yarn.

Happy Measuring!
